The Legend of Rock and Stick
One of RadAcad’s strengths is finding learning and community in unexpected—and radical—places. Several weeks ago, our students hiked Snow King and acquired a rock and a stick along the way. More precisely, the middle school boys picked up a small boulder and a long, thick branch, declaring that both had to reach the summit. Why? Because they are middle school boys!
Soon, the entire group joined in, taking turns carrying Rock and Stick to the summit. The effort became a wonderful example of teamwork: the students set a shared goal, encouraged one another when they grew tired, and looked out for each other. It was also a memorable bonding experience. When we discussed the rock cycle in science class last week, someone immediately said, “Remember Rock? He must have been igneous!” From there, the jokes and shared stories kept growing. Rock and Stick: the objects, the lessons, the legends!
