Eat The Lab!

How do you engage middle school students? Let them eat their labs, of course! RadAcad’s middle schoolers have been studying minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle, and they’re now exploring the interior of the Earth. On Wednesday, they built edible Earth models: Lindor chocolates for the core, pudding for the mantle, graham crackers for the crust, and three colors of Reese’s Pieces to represent igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Along the way, we had a great discussion about proportion and scale, and about how scientists figured out what the inside of the Earth is actually like. We also talked about the truly impressive amount of chocolate in our models. Finally came the best part: students got to eat their labs. Needless to say, everyone agreed that the best labs are edible!
