This middle school science course is built on the Stanford NGSS Integrated Curriculum: An
Exploration of a Multidimensional World. Students will tackle big scientific questions through
hands-on experiments, collaborative projects, and real-world problem-solving.
The curriculum blends earth and space science, life science, physical science, and engineering
using the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate). Learning is
project-based—students will design, build, test, and present solutions to authentic challenges in
small teams.
Each unit:
Is project-based
Includes instructionally embedded assessments
Follows the 5E instructional model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate)
Is phenomena-based
Gives students opportunities to generate their own questions to drive sense-making and problem solving
Incorporates language-development strategies and supports
Includes a pop-out lesson that invites students to apply their learning to explore the intersection of science, social justice, and the greater good
Meet the Instructor
Frances is an experienced special education and early childhood educator who personalizes learning to each student’s strengths and needs. She holds a BA in Special Education (College of Charleston) and an MA in Early Childhood Education (University of Colorado Denver), led special education and general education programs at Red Top Meadows, and has training in Reggio Emilia and Forest School approaches. Her lessons foster social, emotional, behavioral, and academic growth through creative, student-centered instruction.
She will teach our middle school science course based on the Stanford NGSS Integrated Curriculum: An Exploration of a Multidimensional World. Students will investigate big scientific questions through hands-on experiments, collaborative projects, and real-world problem-solving under Frances’s guided, engaging approach.
